From Knitty, Spring 2006:
(pronounced Ma-SEE-yuh)
This pattern was created in celebration of the return of Mission Falls 1824 cotton.
Mesilla is a small New Mexico town that was founded as part of "Old Mexico" in 1848. One of its many claims to fame is that in 1881, at the jail and courthouse in Old Mesilla, Billy the Kid was tried and sentenced to death by hanging (he escaped!)
It's a town with real "Wild West" history. Mesilla inspired the southwestern look of this sweater, and was the location for the photoshoot.
Mesilla (the sweater) is knit in the round, and constructed in the traditional "top-down-raglan" style.
It also incorporates two front darts, and is shaped at the center back. The picot edgings are formed by simply working a row containing lots of yarn overs, and folding the hem at that row. All of the edgings are knit right onto the garment, except for the neckline trim, which is picked up later.
