In all of my (haha) free time lately, I’ve been working on a new version of my Whirligig Shrug pattern. The shrug was initially created for the September 2009 issue of Interweave Knits Weekend. It was only sized for infants up to 24 months. Even with such a limited size range, this pattern has been really popular…check out the 522 Ravelry projects! Someone even told me that this little tiny shrug was one of Ravelry’s top 10 projects for a while!

Unfortunately, this issue of the magazine is out of print, and you can only get the pattern IN the magazine.

BUT…it being September means that my one year non-compete agreement with Interweave is over, and I can re-release the pattern myself!

I’ve upsized it to fit not only infants, but the entire range of child sizes from 3 months to 12 years. In this pattern, you’ll have a total of NINE sizes, so you could knit one for every girl in the family! I knit the 6 month size for Olive in an evening, and the one for Mazie (4T) in a total of about 6 hours.

I’ve been working with some wonderful people in the Ravelry Group “The Testing Pool” who have volunteered their time in exchange for a few patterns from my Rav Shop to try the pattern out. Each of the new sizes has been tested by several knitters, and all of their suggestions and comments have been taken to heart. Jenn Jarvis has done a great job as tech editor, and the pattern is ALMOST ready to go! I just need to fill in the blanks on a couple of yardages (yarn quantities) and get my daughters to hold still long enough to get some photos!

Here’s Mazie last spring in the original shrug:

My heart melts! She was so LITTLE!!

Anyway, the pattern should be ready in a few days, I’ll let you know!

Lots of people have also commented that they’d like to have the pattern in adult sizes. I’ve started working on it, and that pattern will be released separately at some point in the hopefully-not-too-distant-future.

ETA: The pattern is now live and ready for purchase in my Ravelry Shop.

  1. Gosh, Mazie has grown SO much. I’m looking forward to buying this pattern as soon as you release it so I can make it for my granddaughter. She is 9 and I think she’ll love wearing it!

  2. Oh, I seriously heart this shrug. If you need test knitters for adult sizes, I’d be all over it.

  3. I love this pattern and I made it for my two year old when the Interweave Magazine came out. My babysitter asked if I could make it for her 8 year old soon after and I did. I played around with the guage and the number of stitches and all and somehow, magically, managed to make it fit perfectly. But, it is so nice to know that there is going to be a pattern for up to 12 years!

  4. Ooh I loved knitting the whirligig shrug, it was such a lovely pattern. I am very excited that you have made bigger sizes too because we are in spring now so I shall be able to knit my daughter one in a size 12!

  5. You read my mind! I made this recently for a 2 year old, and it was so cute. I’m delighted that it’ll be in larger sizes.

  6. Cool! Someone in my knitting group made the original as a gift for another group member’s new baby. It turned out adorable, and I’m looking forward to the expanded size version.

  7. Your girls look so cute in these pictures!! I don’t have kids yet, but I think I may find some to knit this sweater for just based on how adorable your two look in it.

  8. The girls are very cute ! No wonder you stay busy … shrugs are very cute as well … do you have enough purple to knit one for yourself ? Cutesy to be sure but they are little enough to think it is fun.

  9. Oh my goodness, this has me so excited! I absolutely loved this pattern when I saw it in IK, but my little girl was just a wee bit too big for it. I’m going to be first in line when it’s released! Thanks!

  10. So cute!! I am anticipating the adult version (I was one of those who saw it in it’s original publication and immediately wished it was sized for adults!). Your girls are adorable.

  11. Oh good! I was just looking at this pattern on Ravelry yesterday and wishing it came in larger sizes.
Those little red headed girls of yours are so cute!
    Blessings,
    G

  12. I have the original magazine with Whirligig in it. I substituted a cotton worsted to make it larger and that worked very well. However, I am eager to have the new version as this is definitely going to be a staple of mine for gifts for girls — of all sizes.

  13. OH HOW CUTE!! And they look like baby dolls. I’m not a knitter (papercrafter) but will SO be pointing my mom in your direction!! Fabulous stuff!!

  14. Love this little shrug! I just ‘whipped’ one up for my great niece’s first birthday, as she needed a new white sweater. Now it’s been requested that I make one for her older sister, good thing I bought that extra skein! Stefanie, you mentionend in September that you were planning an adult version, any news on that? I am SO interested! I would be happy to test knit it for you.
